Revolutionary Insights into the Abolition of Slavery in the Netherlands
Have you ever wondered why it took so long for the Kingdom of the Netherlands to abolish slavery in its colonies? The roots of dissatisfaction can be traced back to the seventeenth century when modest criticisms began to emerge. However, it was not until the 1780s that the first condemnatory books about the deplorable lives of slaves were published. Influential figures like John Stedman, Dirk van Hogendorp, Petronella Moens, and Betje Wolff paved the way for a growing anti-slavery movement in the Netherlands.
In 1842, three separate citizen petitions were presented to the king, urging for the abolition of slavery. Interestingly, one of these petitions was organized by women. Unfortunately, all of them were rejected, with the excuse that the liberation of slaves would be too costly. Nevertheless, the "Abolitionists" persisted in their efforts, both inside and outside the parliament, steadily gaining momentum and importance.
The critical impact of newly published anti-slavery books in the 1850s provided an additional impetus to the movement. Finally, after a decade of unyielding advocacy, the government could no longer maintain its position, leading to the official abolition of slavery.
In his groundbreaking work, "Hollandse bedaardheid," Dirk Tang brings to light the stories of the courageous individuals who fought against the tide from the early nineteenth century onwards, tirelessly striving for the abolition of slavery and protesting against the government's sluggish response. Tang's lucid and comprehensive overview contributes immensely to a difficult and ongoing discourse on this historically significant topic.
"Tang's insightful and valuable contribution presents a highly readable account, helping shed light on a complex debate." - Henk Slechte, Geschiedenis Magazine
