An Archaeology of Exchange: Uncovering the Intricacies of Human Sociality
An Archaeology of Exchange takes us on a captivating journey into the heart of human sociality and anti-sociality. While there is a plethora of archaeological studies on exchange, our approach delves deeper, exploring exchange as a fundamental social mechanism. Rather than solely focusing on its cultural, economic, or political implications, we aim to offer a fresh perspective, viewing human sociality through the lens of exchange.
Unraveling the Mysteries of Late Ceramic Age Exchange
Our investigation concentrates specifically on the exchange of social valuables during the later part of the Late Ceramic Age in the Greater and Lesser Antilles, spanning from AD 1000/1100 to 1492. By framing our research questions within a unique blend of theories, including Costly Signalling Theory and Complex Adaptive System theory, we aim to shed new light on this fascinating era of exchange.
A Theoretical Framework with Historical Roots
Our theoretical framework finds its roots in Marcel Mauss' groundbreaking concept of exchange, as elucidated in his renowned work Essai sur le don of 1950. Through an intricate interplay between theories, such as the paradox of keeping-while-giving and gene/culture co-evolution, we explore the complexities of exchange in the Late Ceramic Age.
Unveiling the Fascinating World of Shell Faces
To put our theories to the test, we conduct an extensive case study on a specific category of Late Ceramic Age social valuables: shell faces. These enigmatic artifacts, ranging from central Cuba to the Île de Ronde in the Grenadines, serve as a window into the nature and utilization of social valuables by both communities and individuals during this pivotal period in history.
An Archaeology of Exchange offers an intriguing exploration of the intricacies of human sociality, unveiling novel insights into the significance of exchange in the Late Ceramic Age. Join us on this captivating journey as we unravel the mysteries hidden within the exchange of social valuables.
