Revolutionizing the Understanding of Mental Disorders
Traditional views on mental disorders have long been dominated by genetics and neurobiology, thanks to the influence of pharmaceutical advancements. However, renowned psychologist Paul Verhaeghe presents an alternative perspective that challenges this common belief. He argues that mental disorders are essentially moral disorders, rooted in the influence of our environment and societal norms.
Morality and Ethics in Flux
In Verhaeghe's thought-provoking theory, morals and ethics are heavily influenced, if not entirely determined, by our surroundings. Different cultures inherently possess distinct norms and values, leading to varying definitions of what is considered normal or abnormal. Consequently, the only common trait of psychiatric and psychological deviations is their failure to align with the prevailing social order.
A Society in Crisis
Verhaeghe further posits that our current neoliberal society, which has shaped our identities, norms, and values over an extended period, has had a profoundly negative impact on mental well-being. Statistical data indicates an unprecedented surge in mental disorders, which are not only different from those observed decades ago but are also being approached differently in terms of treatment.
The Current Approach: Discipline over Understanding
Compared to traditional psychotherapy, the contemporary approach to treating mental disorders can be seen as little more than a form of discipline, perfectly aligned with the prevailing fear of others. Verhaeghe suggests that this fear itself is a consequence of neoliberalism, making it increasingly difficult for collective protest against societal issues to gain traction.
A Call to Action
In light of these issues, Verhaeghe asserts the urgent need for collective action and protest. As a respected professor and chair of Psychoanalysis and Counseling Psychology at UGent, he has dedicated his research to exploring the intersection between societal changes, identity, and mental disorders. His latest book, "The End of Psychotherapy," is a testament to his commitment to challenging the status quo and sparking crucial conversations.
