Revitalizing Left Politics: A New Perspective on the Crisis of Social Democracy
Once synonymous with the triumphs of the welfare state, social democracy is now ailing. In Greece, France, the Netherlands, and even in Flanders, it has experienced historic electoral lows. Significant sections of its base have grown alienated and disillusioned, contributing to the rise of radical right-wing movements. This essay argues that social democracy is currently facing an existential crisis. It failed to anticipate and adequately respond to the end of post-war economic expansion, ultimately abandoning hopes for fundamental societal change and offering no viable alternative to the emerging neoliberalism. Consequently, social democracy played a part in shaping a Europe plagued by social and democratic deficits.
A Renewed Vision for Left-Wing Politics
Nevertheless, the demise of traditional social democracy does not spell the end for progressive politics. Building upon recent European experiences, the author of this essay endeavors to formulate several theses that can contribute constructively to the debate surrounding the necessary revitalization of left-wing politics. Critically examining concepts such as "the center," "the common good," and "good governance" as implicit ideological expressions of the status quo, the author advocates for a deliberate repoliticization of these notions.
The Paul Verbraeken Memorial Lecture
On April 9, 2004, the world lost a multifaceted activist and freethinker who held critical reasoning in high regard: Paul Verbraeken. In honor of his legacy, an annual lecture series has been established, featuring distinguished speakers addressing pressing issues. It is an opportunity for intellectual discourse, aiming to inspire fresh perspectives and stimulate dialogue on burning topics.
